Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are the first ever fully 3D core pocket monster titles, and the new look may have had some fans concerned at the prospect of something radically different from past games in the series. These fears can now safely be put to rest, as the director of consumer marketing for The Pokemon Company, J.C. Smith, has informed Polygon that X and Y were not designed with the intention of rebooting the franchise.
Instead, Smith claims that the changes displayed in the Pokemon X and Y reveal trailer were born out of Game Freak’s desire to try new things and evolve the world.
There’s no question that the series will evolve thanks largely to the more powerful 3DS hardware, but it sounds like there will still be a lot of familiarity to be found in the upcoming pair of Poke products. According to Smith, Game Freak has also put a lot of effort into making sure it’s a fantastic looking experience on the handheld, and they’ve certainly managed to accomplish just that — despite Pokemon X and Y still being in the “early stages of development.”
There are still a number of details that gamers don’t yet know about the pair of forthcoming Pocket Monster titles, but that will change in the months leading up to the release of both games. Still, it’s a bit of a wait for everyone anticipating Pokemon X and Y.
“They’re always working hard to make sure the games are as slick and polished as possible. But with the new expression of that game – they’ve had the DS for three generations of games now, so I’m sure it took some getting used to to fully utilize the 3DS. But even in this early stage of development, it’s looking really cool.”
For now, all fans can so is check out the three starter Pokemon that will be available to them right from the get go, as well as read up on some details regarding the two new legendary Pokemon Xerneas and Yveltal.
Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are scheduled to appear on the Nintendo 3DS this October.
