The immediate success of Pokemon X and Y aren’t all that surprising given the amount of excitement the games generated leading up to their release, especially since the brand’s popularity has been far from dwindling in recent years. That said, this sales claim only accounts for October 12th and 13th, which means a good number of additional copies have likely been purchased since.

It’s also important to note that the games released simultaneously across the globe for the first time in franchise history, so it’s hard to see exactly how well they’re selling when compared to their predecessors.

Even then, Nintendo has combined regional data to establish that Pokemon X and Y are outselling Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 within the same time frame by more than 70% — both of which managed to shift two million units within two weeks at North American retailers. Going by that data, the numbers are impressive and should be more than reason enough the companies behind their launch to celebrate.

With a number of new features such as Mega Evolution and full 3D battles, there’s a lot that X and Y have going for them (see our review). Couple the demand for the titles with the recent release of the affordable Nintendo 2DS, and Nintendo has ensured that both of the games will continue to generate significant profits for years to come. That said, they still can’t hold a candle to the ridiculous day-one sales for Grand Theft Auto 5 — although no one expected them to.
